2011 2nd Story Studio News
2011 was another year of eclectic booking at 2nd Story Sound. Early in the year we had the influential artist Marina Abramovic in doing narration for a Creative Time art project and finished overdubs and mixing on the new Hazmat Modine record Cicada (one of the best selling world music albums of year in Europe and a winner of the French Charles Cros Award) with Scott Lehrer engineering and producing. Composer Nick Brooke came in to do vocal recording for his mulitmedia opera Border Towns with Jeff Cook at the console. Loudon Wainwright III and Dick Connette produced Loudon's new record Older Than My Old Man Now due for 2012 release on our label with Alex Venguer engineering and such musical luminaries as John Scofield, Erik Friedlander, Rob Moose, Gabriel Kahane, Chris Smither and the extended Wainwright clan performing. Radio producer Judith Kampfner recorded several new radio plays and documentaries for BBC Radio including Dinner in the Village. Stewart Lerman recorded music for Boardwalk Empire with Vince Giordano among other musicians (Stewart's sound track CD of the BE music won a 2011 Grammy!). In the spring Scott mixed a live Alice Tully concert recording of Kurt Weill's Knickerbocker Holiday for Ghostlight Records featuring the voices of Victor Garber and Kelly O'hara. Terence Blanchard recorded music for Motherf*er with the Hat with Acme Sound Partners producing. We continued to work with Carnegie Hall/Weill Institute and Tom Cabaniss in creating study recordings for their Musical Explorers eductional program. And for something completely different, Gato Barbieri recorded sax solos for his Argentinian hometown soccer team's theme song. We recorded Tom Kitt's score for Shakespeare in the Park and had Antony Hegarty in with Thomas Bartlett working out arrangements for a new Antony record. New music composer Elizabeth Hoffman recorded several of her pieces for an upcoming record and Scott produced sound tracks for museum installation producers MediaCombo and RBH Multimedia. Musical theatre songwriters J. Michael Friedman, Jeff Lunden, Jeffrey Stock and Peter Melnick were all in doing new projects with our engineers. In the fall Scott produced and engineered Bebe Neuwirth's new CD Platinum and Louis Rosen's CDproject Time Was. Sound designer Leon Rothenberg brought in David Byrne to record vocals for his new musical theatre piece and we finished of the year helping Meredith Monk put together her double CD set Monk Remixed.
